The Obdurate Avidity

Chapter 12

Between movies we would run to the washroom and the vending machine.  We were catered to by the hospitals room service… Not.  We ate the hospital food, and convinced them to bring James a plate too.  I think he won cuteness points with the nurse.  His smile can make people do nearly anything under its influence.

It was close to 6 in the evening, nothing was happening  James had to go home the day before.  Every last movie was long since depleted, and without James at my side; the days were long and brutally boring.  The room was beginning to shrink!  I swear to god.  All that could be heard was the scampering of people in the halls.  My parents had run into town again leaving me once again to wait in this stupid cell.  It had gotten to the point where, even the springs in the bed were annoying me.  I’d try to sleep and pass the time, but there was no way my body would allow it.  So I stared at the ceiling tiles, and connected the dots; in hopes of some form of amusement.

“Adrian.”  A familiar voice snapped me back to the real world.

“Dr.  Morgan?”  I smirked, as there was no one there.  The door than crept open, and in came the odd man holding a clip board.

“Ah good you’re awake.  I was just popping in to let you know this visit has come to an end.  I seem to have run out of excuses to keep you here.  So tomorrow morning at eight, you will be discharged and scooted out the door.”  Dr. Morgan said with a smile.

“Thank God!”  I let my head fall back and role in a semi-circle, than snap back up in his direction.  “Thanks Dr. Morgan!”

“I must say, this place wont be the same with out you and James around.  But I’m going to have your parents call in every now and than for the next couple of weeks, just to make sure everything is going smoothly.”

“Alright.  To be honest, I really am going to miss you… and the burgers here.”  I smiled.

“Hahaha…”  Dr. Morgan chuckled,  “You still have some time for one last fill.  Just remember, if anything happens again, that I’m the first person your parents call.  You’re  entire visit here has left me with so many questions.  I’m sure you’re aware of my little obsession with mysteries.”

“Yea, your daughter told us.  But even if she hadn’t I’m sure we would have guessed.”  I smiled.

“Well when your parents get back, let them know I want to speak with them.”  Dr. Morgan requested as he backed away to the door.

“Okay, bye Dr. Morgan!”

“Cya Adrian.”  With that  he was gone.

The next few hours dragged by.  My parents came back, spoke with Dr. Morgan; filled out some forms of what ever.  I watched a couple movies my mom rented,  and dragged everyone down for one last burger in the cafeteria.  I wish I could say the night flew by, but it was long and agonizing.  It was nearly impossible to sleep, I had done so much of that recently that my head just couldn’t do it.  Along with the excitement of going home, I was screwed.

Alas, the day arrived.  The sun rose slowly, and the time seemed to get stuck on every dot of the clock.  But eventually, my parents were packing up and filling out my discharge papers, and we were off!  Homeward bound!  Oddly enough, the moment I was in the car and buckled in, my head hit the head rest and I was out like a light.  It seemed like only moments had passed and I was back at home!

Pulling up in the driveway, James was there waiting on the front steps for our arrival.  Before the car had even came to a complete stop the door was being opened and James was tearing me out, and embracing me in a wonderful welcome home hug.  We brought everything into the house, and before I knew it I was in my room….  Hitting the pillow…  Fast asleep.

I swear I dreamt of sugar plum fairies that night…  And maybe James was there too…  Hehehe *Blush*  When I finally woke up it was just after 6am.  The sun was just rising, and so did my confusion.  I had somehow forgot I was at home.  The crisp air of the outdoors filled my lungs.  The familiar scent of home comforted me.  Wow.  For the first time since we moved here.  This was home.  It felt nice.  I got up, and skipped down the stairs for some breakfast.  My parents were still in bed….  Damn!  I was hoping for some yummy cooked mother food!  So instead I settled for some toast and count chocula.  It felt so good to be in my own home, eating my own food.  Knowing I was free once more.  No more late night check-ups.  No more  horrid intrusions when me and James were alone.  YAY!

A couple hours later, I was playing Halo, my parents were just beginning to show signs of life.  The sun was now high in the sky.  And there was a knock on the door.

“Adrian!  James is here!”  Dad yelled up the stairs.

“Okay! Send him up!”  I yelled back, trying to hold back the tone of excitement in my voice.  I paused my game and scampered to make myself a little more presentable.  But it was too late.  The door creaked open and there was James with a beautiful smile on his perfect face.  “I love you.”  GAH!  Did I just say that hehe, what a dork I’ve become.

“Wow!  Good morning, and I love you too!”   He smiled, barely being able to get threw the door before I rushed him into a warm long hug.

“Sorry I passed out on you yesterday.  I don’t know what happened.”

“It’s alright.  You’re up now, and looking beautiful I might add.”  James blushed.

“Awe, thanks.”  I was caught off guard, as I realized I was only in my pajama bottoms.  “Wow… you have low standards hehehe.”

“Nah, I figure the less clothes the better.”  He giggled.

“Well by those standards, you’re hideous!  Take off those disgusting clothes!”  I joked.

“Hehehe, later.  Your parents are cooking breakfast.”

“YES!  I thought I smelt something yummy!  Are you staying for food?”

“I think so, your mom said to get you ready and bring you down.”

“Cool.  Well than!”  I scampered to get dressed as the motivation of home cooked yummies began to fill my head.  In between throwing on some shorts and sliding on a shirt, I paused and wrapped James in a long warm welcome.  I pulled him close to me so I could feel his heartbeat touching my own.  I took in his wondrous scent, holding him tightly against me, I leaned in and gently kissed the side of his neck, just below the ear.  Burying my face in his shoulder, feeling his arms holding me firmly against him.  He gently pushed my head back with his nose to feel my lips against his own.  Shivers travelled across my body as his soft tongue found its way to mine.  A long beautiful kiss greeting me back into the real world.  Wow, this was my world.

With a hint of regret, we journeyed down the stairs to the kitchen where mother had prepared a wonderful breakfast of back bacon and home made hash browns.  Mmmm, she really knew how to make a meal.  Seemed even my mother was inspired by our new home.  We hadn’t had her home made take out special in quite some time.  She had become content with real cooking.  And was becoming quite fond of doing so.  All in all, this place was bringing out the best in all of us.  Well, recent events set aside anyway.

It was so creepy, thinking back on all the horrid events that had taken place since our arrival.  Missing persons, monstrous looking man eating creatures.  The odd people of the town.  The oddities scattered through out the day.  All seemed worth it, just for this small piece of belonging which seemed to now be part of us.  What was it about this town that made us accept every event, and still feel like this was the best place on earth?  Was this why the people here were so strange?   Were they trying to protect its secrets from the outside world?  Gee when you think about it, with every little question about this town, another one is born.  God this bacon is good.
